Structures and Materials Lab
Learn about our laboratory, our major roles in the College of Engineering and our impact with the University of Miami.
In the College of Engineering at the University of Miami since 1959.
Established in 1959 with the College of Engineering as a result of James McArthur's generous donation, the SML uses 10,000 square-feet of interactive research facilities with undergraduate, graduate students and faculty involvement.
The SML at the University of Miami is one of only six university laboratories in the United States accredited by the International Accreditation Service to perform International Code Council (ICC) compliance testing in accordance with ISO 17025 standard. The laboratory uses state of the art equipment and modern instrumentation for experimental and analytical research, and benefits from specialized industrial outreach through it community involvement.
Additionally, the SML conducts fundamental and applied research through the NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center for Integration of Composites into Infrastructure (CICI), and is FDOT accredited for "Florida Method of Test for Evaluation for Bearing Pads FM 5-598".
